In this interview, Finley Chapple from Bend, Oregon, reflects on their transformative journey in Hirota, Rikuzentakata. Finley was rejuvenated by Hirota’s mountains and deeply moved by the local community’s “extreme generosity”.

Through “heart-to-heart” connections that transcended language, they learned to slow down, disconnect from screens, and embrace a life defined by compassion and self-reliance.

Finley’s story explores how a change of pace and interaction with locals can lead to new insights, values, and their perspectives on life.

Q. To start, could you please introduce yourself?

Finley: Hello! I’m Finley Chapple from Bend, Oregon, in the USA. Before coming here, I spent several months at a folk high school in Denmark. Oregon is really pretty, so a shout-out to my home state!

The First Steps in Rikuzentakata

Q. What made you choose this specific program in Hirota?

Finley: It was actually through a connection my school in Denmark had with an organization called SET. I saw the program offered on the school website and decided to do it, though I didn’t actually know much about what it would be like because the website didn’t have a lot of information.

Q. What was the biggest difference between what you expected before arriving and what you found once you got here?

Finley: I thought the town would be a bit closer together, and I expected to see more active reconstruction. However, I realized it’s been 16 years since the tsunami, so it makes sense that the heavy reconstruction has finished.

The biggest thing for me was the landscape. I live in a mountainous area, but Denmark is very flat. I hadn’t seen a mountain for five or six months, so when I arrived here, I was so happy to see mountains again.

Q. Was there any other sight that surprised you when you first arrived?

Finley: I was surprised by the traditional Japanese architecture still in the area. And, honestly, the bathrooms!. Seeing the spray at the airport used to wipe down toilet seats was a really good idea I hadn’t seen before.

Q. Regarding your interactions with the locals, is there a specific event that left a deep impression on you?

Finley: It’s hard to choose just one, but my birthday and the day before were amazing. We went to a sushi restaurant where the owners were so friendly; they talked to us a lot and even dressed us up in baseball caps for photos.

Then, on my birthday, it was snowing, and we were walking to a temple. A woman named Megumi from a sweet shop saw us outside, told us to come inside because it was cold. We chatted for around an hour, and then she offered us a ride to the temple. That kind of unsolicited kindness was overwhelming in the best way!

Q. What do you think is a “unique luxury” of this town that you can’t experience elsewhere?

Finley: Definitely the generosity of the people. Everyone has been so willing to sit and talk with us, or help us out. Also, the combination of the food, the nature, and the Michinoku Coastal Trail is very special.

Q. Was there a moment you felt a “heart-to-heart” connection with an elderly local, even if you couldn’t speak the language perfectly?

Finley: Yes, with Megumi at the sweet shop — I felt her humor and good energy even without perfect communication. Also, during a homestay, we were just able to “coexist” with the people hosting us, even when we didn’t fully understand each other. Recently, I helped a neighbor chop wood and move fishing ropes. I really enjoy just hanging out and working alongside them.

Q. What have you found to be the most inconvenient thing about being here?

Finley: Not being able to drive. It’s such a pretty area, and I’d love to explore the mountains more, but I didn’t get an international driver’s license. It’s also frustrating when I can’t understand someone speaking to me; it makes me wish I had studied the language harder before coming.

Q. How has staying in this town changed your personal values or lifestyle?

Finley: It has taught me to slow down and enjoy smaller things. I’ve learned to disconnect from screens and spend more time in nature. I’ve also started cooking with more whole ingredients rather than processed food.

Most importantly, being a foreigner here has given me a new perspective on compassion. I want to take that friendliness and patience home with me so I can treat others with more kindness, especially those who might feel like “outsiders”.

Q. Among all the kindness you’ve encountered, what do you want to carry with you for the rest of your life?

Finley: I want to be a more giving person. When someone gives you their time and energy, it makes you want to do the same for others. I’ve also become inspired to be more self-reliant. Seeing people grow their own food makes me want to start a garden back in Oregon. Food is a wonderful way to build a sense of community!

(Note: During this part of the conversation, a small earthquake occurred. Finley noted that while they were scary at first, they now feel like the wildfires back in Oregon — just a part of nature.)

Some Advice from Finley to People Who are Planning to Come Here

• Bring Cash: In the US and Denmark, everything is digital, but Japan uses cash a lot.
• Exchange money at the airport: It’s hard to find a place to do it once you are in town.
• Study Hiragana and Katakana: It helps a lot with daily life.
• Learn social norms: For example, being quiet on public transport, etc…
